let my backyard be wild (other than mowing the grass)
i like the messiness of it, straggly weeds along the fence, surprise wildflowers

Researchers hope to build a better wheelchair

My brother Steve has a new blog -- The Curious Randonneur. He mentions me in his first entry as an inspiration (along with his wife Pramila!) -- ("My sister, Nancy, whose own journaling led me to believe maybe I could do it!")

Well, he does it, all right! If you're interested in bycycling, commitment, social justice, curiosity, exploring and expanding your limits, Seattle or Paris, please check it out.

I followed a link at [info]girlfagpnw's journal and found this wonderful picture. I love the idea of doing an art project like this.

An article about Bloomsbury and the Open House Spirit.

And I found this:

“A Room of Their Own: The Bloomsbury Artists in American Collections” was organized by the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Cornell University. The exhibition opened at Duke University’s Nasher Museum of Art and is now headed to the Herbert F. Johnson Museum at Cornell University (July 18-October 18). The show then travels to the Mills College Art Museum (November 7-December 13); the Mary and Leigh Block Museum at Northwestern University (January 15-March 14, 2010); the Smith College Museum of Art (April 3-June 15, 2010); and the Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State University (July 6-September 26, 2010). A comprehensive hardbound exhibition catalog is available at the museums.

I am ecstatic! I live 2-3 hours from Penn State! I will be able to see the work of the Bloomsbury painters! (....Duncan Grant!....) (July 2010)

Although -- I now see it'll be in Ithaca THIS July -- I wonder how far away that is...

Review: "Let's be honest: Nothing is more painful than bad improv (except perhaps amateur punk rock and unfunny stand-up). So why risk it? Because nothing — really, nothing — is better than good improv. When a handful of people on a bare stage create a whole half hour of entertainment full of strange characters, unexpected plot twists and laugh-out-loud zingers — all based off of a single word — it's really an amazing thing to behold.

Not a gambler? No problem. To see some good improv — the kind that will leave you cheering instead of squirming — head out to Illegal Refill's new monthly show at Studio 34 (4522 Baltimore Ave., 215-387-3434). Their brainy long-form is always full of memorable characters and "no way!" moments. Each month they're performing along with another group, and tonight's line-up could not be beat: They are sharing the bill with local improvi-stars Rare Bird Show (practically a Philly institution at this point).

So BYO (like magic, everything will be funnier!), but don't get so drunk that you think "gynecologist" is a funny and original audience suggestion. Pro tip: It's not."

frustrated today. google stalling (or is it my computer?), mcafee keeps going off, printer taking forever or maybe not at all...our computer slows more every day.

Netflix: 1000 Journals -- love this! -- and be sure to watch it a second time with the commentary turned on. i'm in the process of signing up for a traveling journal right now on 1001journals.com...

the books used for the 1000 journals appear to be the one i used for years. the cachet -- 5-1/2 x 8 -- before i turned to moleskines. but i'm going to buy a cachet for this travelling journal.

This picture was forwarded to me with these words from a friend: "If you didn’t see a photo of this during the president’s trip to England a couple of weeks ago, it is President Obama’s well publicized handshake with the British policeman…something that just is not done in British society…figures of social/societal prominence and certainly heads of state of the UK and other countries never shake the hand of a lowly cop in London! I love this photo."

I hadn't seen it, and I love it, too!
